"I just ordered some great fabric to cover patio cushions for an antique rattan set from the 1940's and could not find anything I liked locally. Your site was a God send, and it will be such fun to be able to say the fabric is from Hawaii! (Now all I have to do is make 8 cushion covers!)"

Fun Novelty Sling

This is a project we hope you never need to make, but if your keiki (child) ends up in a cast, a novelty print sling can make her or him smile!

Why We Like This Project

This is a quick and easy project that can be made with left over fabric as a quick solution, or with a fun print that can cheer up a kid that won't have as much fun this summer as planned. If your child has a favorite character, like Care Bears, Hello Kitty, Pokemon, or a favorite theme, such as puppies or flames, there is probably a novelty print that can make him or her smile. A cast can get heavy, but kids like to show them off. A novelty print can help your child get the cast noticed, and make it more fun.

Our model, unable to spend the summer swimming, got a smile from this fun tropical print in cool blues. We used left over fabric from another project. Fabric is a cotton Hawaiian panel print.

Materials Needed

Notes

This rectangular sling is much easier to make than a triangle sling, but works just as well. Measure to see if 60 inches is long enough or too long for your child. Adjust length as needed. If you don't have fabric that is 60 inches long you can take two 30 inch pieces and stitch them together. The seam should be under the sling and should not show.

Directions

Finish all edges by serging or by folding under a small hem. That's it. Now you can tie it on by placing the arm in the sling and tying behind your child's neck. Hopefully that makes it just a little better. Be prepared for showing it off.
