Monthly Project for May, 2004
Fabric Covered Yearbook or Booklet
Make fabric covers for a yearbook or bind your own booklet. This project is perfect for teens or crafter's of any age.
Why We Like This Project
This is a quick and easy project, that can be created by Teen or beginners. You can make a fabric cover in your school colors, or a bound journal, scrapbook, photo album or other booklet. Note that this project is not suitable for hardbound or spiral-bound books. You need to be able to take off the cover and re-bind.
Materials Needed
- Wide Fabric
- Oak Tag or other card stock
- Glue, Hot Glue preferred
- Paper
Cutting and Assembly
- First measure fabric required. For 8-1/2 by 11 inch paper cut fabric squares 10-1/2 by 13 inches. This gives you an inch on all sides. Cut two squares to do a front and back cover. For other sizes cut fabric one inch more on every side.
- Card stock should be cut to same size or slightly bigger than the book or paper.
- Center card stock to wrong side of fabric.
- Fold up bottom and top. You can press or glue at this point to make project easier and neater, but this is not necessary. Now make a tuck by folding up corner, matching the edge of the triangle with the side edge of the card stock. Carefully pull over the side. You should have a nice mitered corner. Do the corner on the same side the same way. You can now glue the side down. Repeat on other side. This is the trickiest part of the project, but with a little patience it's not really hard.
- Now glue the paper on top to cover your edges. If paper goes all the way to the edges you may want to trim the edges the paper just a little so the paper doesn't show from the front. The paper is there to cover the unfinished edges of fabric and give your cover a finished look.
Binding Book
Once the cool or dry, depending on glue type, you are ready to bind. Punch three holes on one side of front and back covers. Place pages between covers. Tie creatively with ribbon or yarn.
